sometimes. And yet they have no heart. Some of us at NARAL Pro-Choice America are native Ohioans. So some of us are particularly saddened by the hateful new bill introduced this week by State Representative Tom Brinkman (R-Cincinnati) that is specifically designed to act as a challenge to Roe v. Wade. It's a dastardly move, to be sure.In case you don't get your kicks reading state legislation (and we understand if you don't) the bill can be summed up in three words: Total. Abortion. Ban. Nary an exception to be found. (Oh, okay. If, for example, during the course of treatment for some other health issue, a woman has a miscarriage, the physician would not automatically be tossed into the slammer. The bill's compassion shows no bounds.) In those cases where a woman has become pregnant against her will, due to rape or incest, the bill forces her to continue that pregnancy against her will. How's that for self-determination? The bill also denies women access to abortion services in those instances when such services would save her life or preserve her health.Oh sure, it's political game-playing. It was purposefully written to be unconstitutional so that it could challenge Roe in the courts. But what these political players seem unconcerned about is that they're not playing with game pieces, they're playing with the lives and futures of real women. At least, that's a vaguely easier notion to accept than the possibility that they know and just don't care. One thing you should know, however - NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio is no slouch when it comes to fighting The Man. With the help of some fabulous pro-choice activists, they're suing the state to stop the May 18th release of those "Choose Life" license plates. Not only is it totally biased and discriminatory towards one political position over another, but previous attempts to get a similarly pro-choice plate issued were turned down last year. You want a "Choose Life" plate? Sure, fine, but then allow us to have a "Preserve Choice" plate, or "Ain't Choice Grand?" or something that signals the fact that there are two sides to this debate. We've got good reason to be optimistic about the chances of having the license plate struck down. According to the Akron Beacon Journal article, "a statute in South Carolina creating a 'Choose Life' plate was struck down last year by a federal district and appellate court there for viewpoint discrimination. The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear another appeal." So keep fighting the good fight, Ohio. License Plate Lawsuit, WTVG-TV, Cleveland
And people wonder why I want people like that guy hung by his balls. More young girls and women doing the home abortion game. More young women feeling like property not people in their own rights. We do not need to have our choices taken away, we need them left alone.
